» Local Council

Gold Coast City Council, or GCCC, is the local governing body for Gold Coast region. The city council serves as the local authority for the Gold Coast City, which is the second most populated city in Queensland. Moreover, the council is also the second largest local governing body in Australia next only to Brisbane in Queensland. During the period between 2002 and 2003, the council had more than 2,500 staff members. GCCC is said to be one of the largest earning local authorities with revenues exceeding a billion Australian dollars.

    History of Council

The formation of local government in Gold Coast back dates to the 19th century when the colonial government decided to levy taxes for local services that were offered at a huge cost. Hence, the divisional system was formed to manage the funds and local services. Some of the places in the Gold Coast region like Coomera, Nerang, Waterford and Beenleigh belonged to the 74 divisions that were formed earlier. In the past, the role of local governments was restricted only to a few services like managing small councils and developing roads.

Recently, a decade ago, the local governing body faced various challenges in administering the city. Hence, a commission was established to review the boundaries of the council. As per the commission’s recommendation, the shire of Albert was merged into the Gold Coast City to form the new governing body for the Gold Coast region.

    Role of Today’s Council

The Gold Coast City Council manages a wide area ranging from Albert River to the border of Queensland-New South Wales. The Council’s administration is divided into various divisions including Community Services, City Governance, Major Projects and Economic Development. Every local government has a set of laws to ensure good administration. Local laws developed by the council ensure safety and harmony for the inhabitants.

As GCCC is one of the largest local authorities in Australia, it is responsible for a wide range of services including infrastructure development, health services, recreation, water services, environmental protection and other cultural activities. The council is also handling plenty of development projects like Heavy Rail, Broadwater parklands, Rapid Transit and Marine Precinct.
