I went to Sushi Bay at Robina Town Centre on the weekend with my wife. We sat down and were greeted in a way from a hostess and we were promptly given our menus. I ordered Salmon Don which is a slice of Salmon in a bowl on a bed of rice.

The waiter that  delivered Chicken Terriyaki to me. I told him that I ordered the Salmon. He very rudely told me that I didn’t and that I was wrong. My wife said “my husband did order the Salmon because he told me that is what he felt like”. The waiter then took an argumentative approach.

So I said, fine! I will eat the Chicken Terriyaki Don. I looked in the Bowl and there was about 1 inch thick layer of rice in the bottom of the bowl with chicken on top. I said can you please put more rice. I explained to him that this was not enough as there was more chicken than rice. He said “you can have more rice, but you have to give me another $1.50″.

I then got a little upset and explained to him that I was accepting eating Chicken Terriyaki when I ordered Salmon and the least he could do was give me enough Rice for my meal. The service was shocking. Then I tried a piece. The rice was horrible and dry – definitely NOT Japanese rice. The chicken was unexplainable. VERY sweet and as if it was covered in some kind of batter. I think it was deep fried but could not be sure.

I gave it to my wife to try. She is Thai so she really knows her Rice. She said that is cheap rice that should definitely not be served in Restaurants. I was appalled at how we were treated and then I was upset with the food.

My Opinion:

This is Non-authentic Japanese. The staff in the restaurant are Korean and not Japanese. I found this to be interesting. Kind of like going to a Korean Restaurant (which I love) being run by Australians. Doesn’t really sit well with me. I am not saying Koreans don’t know how to make Sushi. But they don’t really understand how to make  Chicken Terriyaki. especially when the “chefs” at Sushi Bay at Robina Town Centre use Korean Rice in Chicken Terriyaki Don.

I believe that Sushi Bay will need to improve their food quality,  increase portions of their dishes- at least to a reasonable standard and VERY seriously keep an eye on their staff.
